Description
A digitally enhanced photograph of Florence, a Falmouth Working Boat, racing past St Mawes Castle during Falmouth Oyster Festival 2018.
Falmouth Oyster Festival, one of Cornwall’s biggest and most well-loved specialist food festivals, celebrates the diversity of Cornish seafood, the native Fal Oyster and the start of the oyster dredging season with 4 days of feasting, live music, craft stalls and cooking demonstrations
Florence was built in 1895 and is a traditional Falmouth working boat, a classic gaff cutter used for fishing oysters the traditional way, dredged under sail or oar in the Fal Estuary, around Mylor and The Roseland and Carrick Roads.
She worked as an oyster dredger in the Fal estuary under various owners until bought by the St Mawes Working Boat Syndicate for the purpose of racing and pleasure cruising.
