Description
Swanwick Pool at sunset.
The picturesque River Hamble is one of the most important yachting centres in the UK and the hub of the South Coast sailing community. There are many waterside pubs and restaurants and the community love to host competitive events such as Hamble Week and the Burlesdon Regatta. It is a wonderful place to cruise the peaceful waters and relax.
Looking at Swanwick pool today it's easy to imagine things haven't changed much in the last 70 years or so.
Boat yards have been here for centuries and Swanwick Marina has been here since 1827.
The stunning sailing scenery on the River Hamble and Solent became a key feature of the 1980s BBC television show Howard's Way. The series dealt with the lives of the yachting and business communities through the eyes of the Howard family in fictional village of Tarrant (Bursledon) where the Howard's lived and Tarrant Yacht Club being the Royal Southern Yacht Club based in Hamble. The Elephant Boatyard became the Mermaid Boatyard and The Jolly Sailor, a favourite riverside pub, kept its name in the series. On the eastern side of the river, the village of Warsash also doubled as Rhode Island in the USA.
