Description
Each Christmas Oxford Street is decorated with festive lights.
It was a great treat to visit the toy shop here to chose a birthday present when I was a small child living on the outskirts of the city and I returned for a milestone birthday. This time I understood the lights weren't there just for me.
The Christmas lights began in 1959, five years after the neighbouring Regent Street began the tradition. The lights were abandoned in 1976 and 1977 due to economic recession, returning in 1978 when Oxford Street organised a laser display.
In mid- to late-November a celebrity turns on the lights and they remain lit until 6 January, Twelfth Night.
