Description
Perched on top of a hill in Cornwall between Redruth and Camborne near the village of Carnkie and surrounded by farmland is the Carn Brea Memorial to Francis Bassett. Carn Brea Castle and the monument are visible at the top of the hill from the A30 and all the surrounding area. From the top of the hill you can see all around Cornwall from the north coast to the south coast, on a clear day the far west coast and inland as far as St Austell.
The Bassetts were the most important mining family in the area and had lived in nearby Tehidy for over 700 years. Francis Bassett was however the first to be elevated to the nobility due to his efforts to raise an army of miners to defend the port of Plymouth from the combined Spanish and French fleets.
