Description
A digitally enhanced photograph of Alf Smythers, a Falmouth Working Boat, pictured during Falmouth Oyster Festival 2018.
Falmouth Oyster Festival, one of Cornwall’s biggest and most well-loved specialist food festivals, celebrates the diversity of Cornish seafood, the native Fal Oyster and the start of the oyster dredging season with 4 days of feasting, live music, craft stalls and cooking demonstrations.
Alf Smythers is a 26ft Pitch Pine on Elm and Oak, Gaffer, built by Alf Smythers and Peter Mayes between 1966-71. One of the very last boats built of wood specifically for oyster dredging on the River Fal, Alf Smythers cuts a handsome figure on the water with a hull and rigging made of bare wood, weathered and patinated with grain and age. The inside of the boat and bow scrollwork are picked out in turquoise paint, which contrasts beautifully with the faded mainsail.
