Description
The working boats on the Fal River are a wonderful sight to see, especially with places like the National Trust property Trelissick as a backdrop.
Native oysters are unique to the Fal river in Cornwall where they grow naturally and have a distinctive taste due to the plankton they feed on in the estuary.
The Fal is a natural and wild fishery where the oysters are not cultured or bred.
The dredges which are towed across the seabed keeps the fishery in good heart and encourages young oysters to settle.
The Fal Oystermen are the last fishery in the world to be regulated for not using machinery, gathering the oysters using sail and oar.
Fal Oysters can grow to about 110mm and can be fished in the designated area using only these traditional methods between October 1 and March 31.
