Description
It's hard to believe now but this unassuming little river with it's flower strewn banks in the far west of Cornwall used to power what was reputedly the second largest water wheel in Britain.
The Tregeseal River runs through the Kenidjack Valley down to the sea at Porthledden below the towering chimney of Cape Cornwall. The wheel was at the end of the valley and measured 65 feet (20m) in diameter. This is where the name Wheal Call comes from - it means 'Great wheel'.
The chimney seen up the valley in this image is part of the sprawling arsenic works built to remove the arsenic and sulphur contained in the tin which was mined here which was detrimental to smelted tin.
