Description
Situated on the cliffs above Chapel Porth Beach on the North Cornwall coast between St Agnes and Porthtowan, views from the ruins of Wheal Coates have been described as some of the most beautiful in the country and it is certainly a wonderful place to watch the sun set.
Built around 1872, Towanroath Engine House, now owned by the National Trust, was part of the workings of the Wheal Coates Copper and Tin Mine and was used to pump water from the 600 foot shaft.
Around 140 miners were employed at the height of production although the productiveness of the mine was intermittent throughout its lifetime from 1815 until 1914.
