Description
Early May sees the pretty market town of Helston in Cornwall celebrate the much-awaited coming of spring and passing of winter in its own unique and colourful way.
The festivities are said to date back to pagan times, but many other influences have become intermingled over the years.
On this day the town comes ablaze with flowers and greenery adorning doorways and roadsides, as befits the name of the day, multi coloured bunting flutters in the breeze and the townsfolk dance the jaunty steps of the Helston Furry Dance through the streets of the town dressed in their finest clothes.
One of the popular locations to see the dances is around the Bowling Green at the bottom of Coinagehall Street.
