Description
In 1620 the Pilgrims chartered the Mayflower to sail from Southampton to the New World to escape religious oppression in England.
Located directly opposite Southampton's Mayflower Park on Western Esplanade and outside the Western Gate of the old Southampton City Walls, the Mayflower Memorial commemorates the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers in August 1620. The Pilgrim Fathers sailed onboard the sailing ships Mayflower and Speedwell to the New World. The memorial was designed and unveiled in 1913 and included plaques commemorating the Pilgrims and after the Second World another plaque was added to honour the 2 million American troops who left Southampton during the war to do battle in Europe.
