Description
Kaskelot is a classic, tough Baraque working ship.
These beautiful ships traded cargoes in Bristol from all over the world until well after the invention of the steam and diesel engines.
Kaskelot berthed on the quay will recreate a traditional sight that would have been familiar to Bristolians, through the 18th and 19th centuries right up until the 1930's.
She worked in the tough Arctic waters delivering supplies to remote settlements in East Greenland and the Rugged Faroe Islands which are halfway between Iceland and Norway. Now she is a film star featuring in dramas such as Shakleton, Cutthroat Island and return to Treasure Island.
Bristol Harbour covers an area of 70 acres. It has existed since the 13th century but was developed into a floating harbour in the early 19th century by installing lock gates on a tidal stretch of the River Avon and providing a tidal by-pass for the river.
