Description
I don't know if a mine ruin in Cornwall can be called 'cute', but Wheal Ellen near Porthtowan with it's castellated chimney stack always makes me smile as it is a delightful, maybe unique, touch of artistry atop of this industrially functional lump of architecture.
South Wheal Ellen, formerly known as Old Wheal Basset, in the rust coloured steep-sided Tywarnhayle Valley was worked from 1856 to 1861. The rich colour is a result of the thousands of tonnes of waste rock which was tipped down its sides left from producing 2,600 tons of copper.
Surrounded by heather and gorse and with it's jaunty hat and ivy dress this, to me, is a really cute engine house.
