Description
Two of my photographs combined and with text added to commemorate our fallen heroes and give thanks to all that served.
To commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
This Lancaster Bomber and two spitfires flew from Southampton Airport on the 4th June 2014 on their way to the Remembrance Ceremonies to mark the 70th anniversary of D-Day in France.
Within the main image is a photograph of Netley Military Cemetery near the banks of the Solent just outside the City of Southampton.
The "Ode of Remembrance" is an ode taken from Laurence Binyon's poem, "For the Fallen", which was first published in The Times in September 1914.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) is a Royal Air Force flight which provides an aerial display group comprising an Avro Lancaster, a Supermarine Spitfire and a Hawker Hurricane. The aircraft are regularly seen at events commemorating the Second World War and upon British State occasions.
Netley Military Cemetery is a permanent military cemetery, the property of the Ministry of Defence. The cemetery was at the back of the Royal Victoria Military Hospital and was used during both wars for burials from the hospital.
The cemetery contains 636 First World War burials but only 35 from the Second World War. In addition to the Commonwealth graves, there are a number of war graves of other nationalities including 69 German graves dating from the First World War.
The cemetery is looked after by The Commonwealth War Graves Commission .
