Description
The buildings on the historic terraces above the harbours of Porthleven are much sought after. So pretty in the summer but in the winter the huge waves wash right over their rooftops.
Two solid granite jetties,100 feet apart with a cannon on each, protect the inner basin of Porthleven Harbour from the many storms which hit Cornwall. Each jetty has the grooves to insert the 2 tonne wooden baulks to protect the fishing boats within.
These huge pieces of wood with metal bolts and ends broke broke under the weight of the continuous storm on the 5th February 2014 and floated around the harbour. What was there to protect, ended up destroying the sheltering fishing boats.
As I wandered around with my camera on a beautiful day in 2020, it was hard to imaging how horrendous that day must have been for the residents of this beautiful place.
