Description
Porthleven, Loe Bar and Loe Pool in the winter sunshine.
Loe Bar is a half mile long shingle bank that separates Loe Pool, the largest natural freshwater lake in Cornwall, from the sea.
Originally this was the mouth of the River Cober which led to a harbour in Helston, but by the 13th century the bar had cut Helston off from the sea and formed the pool.
Cornwall is full of myths and legends and one tale tells that an unscrupulous man called Jan Tregeagle, who sold his soul to the Devil, was tasked to remove all the sand from Gunwalloe and take it to Porthleven. On one of these journeys he is said to have dropped a bag of sand at the entrance of Helston harbour and this formed the Bar.
Although Loe Bar is a stunning location, Loe Bar beach is known locally as an extremely dangerous place to swim. The strong current combined with powerful waves and the steep, heavy shingle bank create a strong drag back.
