Description
The Crown Engine House on the cliff at Botallack in the far west of Cornwall.
Built in the 1800's these two engine houses have withstood the force of natures storms and still cling to the side of the cliff at Botallack in the far west of Cornwall.
Over the decades that I have been visiting them they don't appear to have changed at all.
The lower of the two engine houses is the Crowns Engine House, although the name is used for them both. The higher one is the engine house for the equally spectacular Boscawen Diagonal Shaft, which descends into the cliffs and out under the sea at an angle of 32.5 degrees extending 2,580 feet under the sea beyond the cliffs - half a mile at a depth of 1,360 feet below sea level. Those miners were so brave!
