Description
Victoria Tower Gardens, officially opened in 1914, lies at the heart of Westminster, bordered by the Houses of Parliament, the River Thames, Millbank and Lambeth Bridge. The Gardens were made in the 1870s as part of Joseph Bazalgette's creation of a new sewer system for London. Previously, the site had been occupied by wharves.
Victoria Tower Gardens is home to a number of memorials celebrating freedom.
Rodin's sculpture The Burghers of Calais celebrates heroism, a statue of the suffragette leader, Emmeline Pankhurst and The Buxton Memorial Fountain which was moved here from its original site in Parliament Square. It is a commemoration of the emancipation of slaves in 1834.
