Description
Sloe berries nestling in a bed of lichen.
Sometimes known as Blackthorn, it is actually the fruit of the bush that is known as the sloe.
While the berries are usually ripe for picking in October or November, an excess of rain and low temperatures uncommon for the season have caused the sloes to start fruiting in early September this year.
The abundance of lichens on the trees and bushes in Cornwall are an indicator that the air is clean.
Lichens are widely used as environmental indicators or bio-indicators. If air is very badly polluted with sulphur dioxide there may be no lichens present, just green algae may be found. If the air is clean, shrubby, hairy and leafy lichens become abundant.
