Description
You may have walked past the Oxford Street entrance of Selfridges Department Store in Oxford Street London many times but have you looked up?
Between the illuminated pillars is an ornate clock, a statue of the Queen of Time, riding in her Ship of Commerce.
In the days before mobile phones it was common practice to arrange a rendezvous beneath some well-known clock and in October 1931, to mark the store's 21st birthday, an 11ft tall bronze sculpture, designed by Gilbert Bayes, was unveiled which one writer called ‘London’s newest meeting place’. Other commentators hailed it as ‘one of the sights of London’ and a ‘horological masterpiece’.
Sadly nowadays most Oxford Street shoppers barely notice it.
