Description
Gladiolus communis subsp. byzantinus is a May blooming flower, a beautiful show of colour in the garden when the tulips have gone over but the roses and summer perennials are yet to get going.
It is a wild flower of the Mediterranean, where its magenta spires stud the olive groves through May and June. It's also naturalised in south-west Cornwall and the Scilly Isles (where it's called Whistling Jack) and is 100% hardy in my garden here.
