Description
The Penlee lifeboat safe on it's mooring on a misty night in December.
The Penlee Lifeboat Station is located in Newlyn Harbour on the south coast of Cornwall. The first lifeboat station in Cornwall and the 13th in the UK was established a stones throw away in Penzance and has been saving lives since 1803. The Penzance Station remained operational until 1917. In 1908 an additional lifeboat station was opened at Newlyn but this was only maintained until 1913 when it was closed. The closing of the Newlyn station saw the opening of the Penlee station in 1913 at Penlee Point. This was closed following the Penlee lifeboat disaster in 1981 and the new one opened here, retaining the Penlee name.
