Description
Formerly known as Old Wheal Basset, Wheal Ellen copper mine is one of my favourites and worked from approximately 1826 to 1867.
It is on a bend in the road near Porthtowan in the Tywarnhayle Valley on the north coast of Cornwall. The valley is steep-sided and takes its rust-coloured appearance from the thousands of tonnes of waste rock from the copper mines which was tipped down its sides. This engine house is remarkable for the castellated stack, a rare touch of artistry in what was essentially a purely functional piece of architecture.
