Description
High on the rugged cliffs above Chapel Porth beach near St Agnes stand the ruins of one of Cornwall's most scenic and iconic mines, Wheal Coates tin mine.
With my back to the sea and the impressive Towanroath engine house I was struck by the architecture of the other structures of Wheal Coates on the north Cornwall coast.
The other two engine houses were stamping and winding engine houses which were responsible for hoisting and crushing the tin ore.
The site has several other structures including a further chimney stack and a calciner furnace, built when the mine was re-opened to remove impurities such as arsenic and sulphur from the tin.
