Description
Ancient and modern exist by side in the City of Southampton.
The design of West Quay shopping centre responds to Southampton's existing streetscape and features elevations in a range of materials. Portland Stone, buff coloured brickwork, metal cladding and a masonry base of knapped flint faced stone walls have been used to reflect the variety of existing materials which distinguish the different parts of the city: the historic old town, post-war development and the port building.
The walls here once had the sea lapping at their footings.
150 years ago, visitors could descend these newly constructed steps to reach the beach below, after enjoying the panoramic view across the bay from the walls above.
Catchcold Tower is a well preserved half round tower. The tower and adjoining wall were probably built in the early 15th century, and added to the existing West Wall. It was built larger and more prominent than earlier towers in order to accommodate larger guns. The name Catchcold was a nickname presumably derived from its exposed position on the western shore.
