Description
A monochromatic image of the Vickers Varsity WJ945 in Cornwall.
The Varsity is an important aircraft historically, especially for the Cold War period. It is a distant development of the famous Vickers Welling WWII bomber and served to provide crew training for the pilots, navigators and weapons systems operators of the Cold Way V-Force bombers, the Vulcan, Victor and Valiant. Powered by enormous Bristol Hercules radial engines and equipped with “pannier” mounted bomb bay and bomb aiming station, the Varsity could provide active simulations of the situations and challenges that the crews needed to prepare for during the tense years of the Cold War.
Guided tours of this plane and many others are available at the Cornwall Aviation Heritage Centre.
