Description
MS Ventura is owned by Carnival UK and operated by P&O Cruises. She entered service in April 2008, and is one of the largest cruise ships built for the British market. British actress Dame Helen Mirren officially christened Ventura and became the ship's Godmother, prior to her maiden cruise to the Mediterranean Sea. In a break with tradition, instead of Dame Helen simply pressing a button to send a cradled champagne bottle towards the ship, she commanded a team of Royal Marine Commandos to assist her in naming Ventura in a dramatic abseil.
Shieldhall is a Heritage steam ship and a member of the National Historic Fleet. Recognised to be the largest working steam ship of her type in Britain and probably Europe, she serves as a tribute to Britain's maritime heritage and a living reminder of the golden age of steam.
Although not technically a lighthouse, the Calshot Spit lightship served off Calshot Spit, near Calshot Castle , at the western mouth of the approach to Southampton Water between 1914 and 1987, when it was replaced by a buoy. The lightship was then moved to Ocean Village in Southampton where it served as an attraction to that popular area, but sadly was left neglected and was removed in 2010.
Calshot lightship is currently located near Town Quay in Southampton, awaiting restoration, facing an unknown future.
