Description
The magnificent interior of Truro Cathedral in Cornwall.
The choir and, behind the high altar, the ornately carved reredos of sculptor Nathaniel Hitch.
The nave of Truro Cathedral has an unusual feature – a slight bend in its plan.
In 1898, eighteen years after the cathedral was started, the money to complete the building ran out, although not before the completion of the quire, transepts and crossings. Fortunately, fund-raising re-started almost immediately, and eleven years later work was able to be re-started. When the builders moved back on site and the project’s backers refused to compromise on their vision they realised they would have to pull down houses and shops to complete the second half. Instead, they built a nave that does not fully line up with the rest of the building.
