Description
At the east end of the South Aisle of Truro Cathedral, next to the entrance of St Mary's, the old parish church, is The Baptistery.
The font is made of red Breccia marble from North Africa with green Serpentine rock pillars from the Lizard, England's most southerly point and the fantastically ornate counterweight font cover is carved from oak. The intricately decorated vaulting has a leaf motif at the base of each pillar.
An Italian craftsman, Antonio Bertolucci, travelled to Truro from Lucca, Italy, to help lay the stunning mosaic flooring. He fell in love with a local girl, Eliza Ward, settled here, raised 5 children and was well known locally for his delicious ice cream.
