Description
This gentleman of Mylor, like Cornish families from this area have for centuries, has fished the Carrick Roads and creeks of Falmouth all his life. His livelihood comes from oyster dredging using historic and traditional methods. There is no motor power used to gather Fal Oysters. The dredges are towed by sailing or rowing boats in all weathers between October and March. Considerable skill is required in sailing the vessel at the same time as working the dredges.
Many of the oyster boats, known as Falmouth Working Boats were built at boatyards around the Fal, with some of the oldest boats in the Oyster Fishery dating back as far as 1860.
I am honoured that this wonderful man has allowed me to use an image of him fishing as my business logo for the past 5 years. Thank you Jonathon.
