Description
The local paper, The Southern Evening Echo, wrote this article in June 2014
“Residents living near the Port of Southampton have been warned not to be "unnecessarily concerned" by the sound of gun fire and explosions, as a new television series of 24 is filmed at the site.” which is another special moment in time for this historic dockyard.
The Port of Southampton is a major passenger and cargo port located in the central part of the south coast of England. It benefits from a sheltered location, unique "double tides", close proximity to the motorway network and good rail links. Owned and operated by Associated British Ports since 1982, the port is the busiest cruise terminal and second largest container port in the UK.
From the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century, Southampton docks were a centre for naval shipbuilding and a departure point for soldiers going to war. The port also played a role in the development of hovercraft, flying boat services, seaplanes and the Spitfire fighter plane. Before the advent of jet travel, Southampton was Britain's gateway to the world, the main terminal for Trans-Atlantic travel with the Titanic, Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth ships taking centre stage historically with the Mayflower.
In 1620, the Pilgrim Fathers (also known as Pilgrims or English Separatists) departed from Southampton for North America on the Mayflower and Speedwell.
Today the Port is always bust with shipping, from huge cruise ships and container vessels to the smaller Isle of Wight Red Funnel Ferries and private yachts.
