Description
The Port of Falmouth lies on the western shores of the Carrick Roads in the south of Cornwall. It was created as an ancient valley flooded after the Ice Age and a harbour, the world’s third deepest natural harbour, was formed.
The history of Falmouth Docks can be traced back to the early seventeenth century when Sir John Killigrew started to develop the town and port. By 1688, Falmouth had become the Royal Mail packet station and ships carried mail to and from all over the world.
The city’s docks are still an important part of the local economy despite the decline in its maritime activity. One of Cornwall’s biggest ports, the Port of Falmouth is a busy cargo-handling port of call and a popular destination for cruise ship operators.
