Description
St. Ia, the parish church of St. Ives, is one of the beautiful Cornish churches that are part of the Anglican Diocese of Truro, England. It is dedicated to the Celtic saint St. Ia, and also to St. Andrew, patron saint of Fishermen and St Peter, the Rock. Consecrated in A.D. 1434, the church is built of lovely auburn tinted Cornish granite which was carried by fishing boats from the little village of Zennor. Its tower is one of the tallest of the cornish churches, standing over eighty feet high, like a shepherd watching over its flock on land and sea. In 2010 the church celebrated its 600th anniversary of the laying of its foundation stone.
Opposite the chuch is the War Memorial and Memorial Gardens, full of sub-tropical flowers, plants and shrubs from thousands of miles away which prosper and flourish in the mild year round climate of West Cornwall.
