Description
The ancient gateway to Southampton.
The Bargate was built about 1180, and extended in 1320.
A team of gunners defended the town and 3 guns were stationed here.
The Bargate has been the northern entry to the city of Southampton since Norman times and still marks a division between the ancient town and it's more modern commercial neighbours. The adjoining walls were removed to ease traffic congestion and preserve the main part of the gateway.
The remaining sections of the city walls can be seen jostling for position among the shops, offices and parks.
