Description
On a sunny afternoon in May 2020 the usually bustling town of St Ives was empty of shoppers and holiday makers. Lockdown meant the thousands of visitors couldn't come and all the businesses were closed. This is the first time I've ever seen the benches of the popular Sloop Inn empty and people not spilling out of the door with their refreshments.
The historic Sloop Inn on the wharf at the edge of St Ives Harbour in Cornwall is believed to date from around 1312 AD. The vast majority of the building with its slate roof and white washed exterior originate in the 17th and 18th century. The inn was once a popular haunt for artists in the Victorian era.
The adjoining Smock Shop is only 6'x10' and used to be the harbour master and weighbridge office until 1966 when an artist moved in. It has been a shop since 1984.
