Description
Shakespeare's Birthplace is a restored 16th-century half-timbered house situated in Henley Street, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, England, where it is believed that William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and spent his childhood years. It is now a small museum open to the public and a popular visitor attraction, owned and managed by the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. It has been referred to as "a Mecca for all lovers of literature".
Though nowadays the house stands alone, in Shakespeare’s time it would have been surrounded on both sides by other houses. The risk of fire in that time was so great that there was a town-wide curfew on fireplaces. They didn’t want people going to sleep with the blaze still roaring, so at 8pm a bell rang that was the signal to put out every fire. So the fact that you were probably sharing a bedroom with up to eight people would’ve been a welcome idea.
The houses on either side of Shakespeare’s birth home were demolished in the 1800s for this exact safety reason, which is why it now stands alone.
The walled garden at the back of the house has been specially planted with flowers and herbs named in Shakespeare’s titles.
