Description
Salisbury Cathedral at Christmas is decorated with wonderful works of art.
Part of the cathedral decorations is a group of papier-mache nativity figures and angels, made by sculptor Peter Rush.
The first figures, Mary and Joseph and the crib, were made 10 years ago and each year different, almost life-size figures, have been added shepherds, kings, angels, with the most recent being the angelss, which are suspended around the cathedral.
Once a year, the figures come out of the cathedral store and Peter Rush attends to see if any repairs or brightening up needs doing.
He says: "They are very fragile as they are made from paper, cardboard and wire, and with the help of spray paint, I can freshen them up."
The first time an angel was installed, Peter felt it looked entirely at home: "It looked like an exquisite carving next to the finely carved stone of the cathedral."
