Description
Fishing Cove is a small cove which is the southern most part of Porthleven Sands and the treacherous Loe Bar near Pothleven. It is separated from its neighbour, Church Cove Beach, by Pedngwinian headland.
This stretch of the Cornish coast has a well earned reputation for being treacherous and over the years several lives have been lost. The combination of powerful waves, a steep slippery shingle bank and vicious currents make it a very dangerous stretch of beach.
This area is also well associated with tales of smuggling and shipwrecks including in 1526 the St Anthony carrying gold and silver belonging to the King of Portugal and in 1779 the wreck of the Dutch vessel Slando Welvern carrying wine. This coastline is littered with wrecked ships many of which date from the 1700s and some of which were laden with treasures.
