Description
Mylor is an attractive fishing village on the west bank of Carrick Roads, just north of Falmouth in Cornwall.
Once the site of the westernmost naval dockyard in England, it has one of the most beautifully sited churches overlooking the harbour and is home to the tallest wheel-headed pre-Christian cross in Cornwall. The 17-foot high Celtic cross was being used as a buttress and was discovered during restoration of the ancient church of St Mylor, or Melorus in the late 19th century. Now re-erected next to the church door, it is believed to have marked the original site of St Mylor's grave.
The graveyard containing the separate bell tower is as fascinating as it is beautiful with many ornamental gravestones marking the graves of many packet ship captains and sailors including the graves of over 60 sailors who served aboard the HMS Ganges training ship which was moored at Mylor for many years.
