Description
In 1620 the Pilgrims chartered the Mayflower to sail from Southampton to the New World to escape religious oppression in England.
Located directly opposite Southampton's Mayflower Park on Western Esplanade and outside the Western Gate of the old Southampton City Walls, the Mayflower Memorial commemorates the sailing of the Pilgrim Fathers in August 1620. The Pilgrim Fathers sailed on board the sailing ships Mayflower and Speedwell to the New World. The memorial was designed and unveiled in 1913 and included plaques commemorating the Pilgrims and after the Second World another plaque was added to honour the 2 million American troops who left Southampton during the war to do battle in Europe.
The memorial is a square, slightly tapering column on a stepped base. It has a cupola on top with a mosaic dome of white and gold. Sitting proudly at the top is copper model of the 'Mayflower' carved with the city arms and the date '1620' on reverse.
The transcript of the plaque on the memorial reads
'ON THE NIGHT OF AUGUST 1620, FROM THE WEST QUAY NEAR THIS SPOT, THE FAMOUS MAYFLOWER BEGAN HER VOYAGE CARRYING THE LITTLE COMPANY OF PILGRIM FATHERS WHO WERE DESTINED TO BE THE FOUNDERS OF THE NEW ENGLAND STATES OF AMERICA ON THE 15TH OF AUGUST 1913 THIS MONUMENT TO THEIR MEMORY WAS UNVEILED BY HIS EXCELLENCY DR WALTER HINES PAGE AMBASSADOR FROM THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO THE COURT OF ST JAMES
