Description
Loe Bar near Porthleven in Cornwall is a coastal bar made of sand and shingle created by storms which cut off the Cober Valley from the sea.
The bar was formed in the 12th century and until then merchant ships could sail up the estuary as far as Helston. Loe Pool is the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall. Both ends are attached to the mainland and the distance between the fresh water of Loe Pool and the salt water of the sea is about 200 yards.
The surrounding Penrose Estate is a mixture of rich farmland and woodland with a walk possible around Loe Pool with many paths to explore.
