Description
Holy Trinity Old Church, St Day, Cornwall. Sir John Betjeman's favourite church.
This extraordinary building, constructed in 1828, is one of the so-called Waterloo Churches, built with money made available by the government after the Battle of Waterloo for the large and wealthy mining community of the area.
It served as the parish church until structural problems forced its closure in 1956 after which it was abandoned, vandalised, neglected and under serious threat of collapse.
After a thirty-year fight the St Day Old Church Community Interest Company was handed control of the impressive ruins by the Church of England and it is now a community space for theatre, music, film, art, and other educational and social uses.
