Description
Until recently Hayle railway bridge, which was built in 1837, had remained unmodified since 1852. It is regarded so important that it has been classed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Steam was introduced onto the Hayle section of the railway in 1843 but the construction of the railway meant that only light engines could be used so in 1852 a new railway was opened spanning the valley on the impressive Angarrack viaduct and passing through Hayle on a new wooden supports over Foundry Square which were later replaced with the current stone pillars.
