Description
This section of Southampton City walls is opposite Town Quay and the sea used to enter the city here under an arch to fill Southampton's tidal moat.
Gods House Tower gatehouse, defended by a double portcullis, was extended in 1417 by the addition of a two-storey gallery and a three-storey tower, to the east of the gateway. It was known as the Saltmarsh Gate and God's House Gate after the nearby hospital for poor travellers. The tower above the gate was called Lambcote Tower.
In 1707 the building was being used as a 'house of correction' until in 1786 it was formally adapted to become the Town Gaol, a role it retained for nearly 100 years having three prisons in one. Debtor's cells were located in the tower, along with both a bridewell and felons prison in the main building.
