Description
A historical character, maybe Poldark himself, returns home to his beloved Cornwall from his overseas travels.
Cornwall has always been synonymous with smuggling, but little is known about its links to piracy.
Think of pirates today and the glamorous Hollywood Jack Sparrow springs to mind but centuries ago pirates were a real concern to Cornwall, often kidnapping people to sell into slavery.
Smuggling boomed until the end of the 18th century as Cornwall had a long expanse of rocky, virtually uninhabited coast, with few revenue men to patrol it.
