Description
Wheal Ellen is an attractive engine house with an unusually castellated chimney.
Wheal Ellen copper mine was built to house a 70" pumping engine which was never fitted and it is rumoured that the builder of the engine house was never paid. It was created in 1834 by a merger of two former mines. The company that built the engine house in 1866 had intended re-working the original sett in conjunction with nearby Wheal Music under the name Ellen United Copper and Zinc Company, however nothing else is heard of the new concern post 1866. The mine was known to have produced some 24,000Tons of copper from 1826-62 during previous operations. Over 24,000 tones of copper were sold before the mine closed in 1862. The engine house was built for a re-opening in 1866 but a nationwide financial crisis resulted in the project being aborted.
