Description
I was lucky to see this small group of Red-breasted mergansers on a winter morning walk to Restronguet Weir in Cornwall. They were swimming on The Carrick Roads, a large waterway that was created at the end of the last Ice Age when sea levels rose dramatically and created a huge natural harbour.
Red-breasted mergansers are resident all year in the UK although their winter and summer habitats are very different. In summer they breed on rivers and some lakes in Scotland and the North West of England and North Wales. In winter they can be found at sea, around the coast, or on lakes close to the sea.
The Carrick Roads conceal countless picturesque creeks and inlets, many of which are home to charming villages and waterside pubs, nestling among the wooded valley sides.
