Description
A purple iris contrasting wonderfully with the cerise of the gladiolus byzantinus.
Gladiolus byzantinus is a May blooming flower, a beautiful show of colour in the garden when the tulips have gone over but the roses and summer perennials are yet to get going.
It is a wild flower of the Mediterranean, where its magenta spires stud the olive groves through May and June. It's also naturalised in the south west of Cornwall and the Scilly Isles where it's called Whistling Jack and is 100% hardy in my garden here.
