Description
Hastings historic famous Old Town, nestled comfortably between the dramatic East and West Hills, is a charming mix of half-timbered houses, narrow streets and passageways, locally known as 'twittens'.
The Old Town grew up around the fishing quarter known as The Stade and the Hastings fishing fleet, the largest beach-launched fishing fleet in Europe, still the source of some of the freshest and best fish you will ever see. The Stade is famous for the impressive and unique tall black net lofts, which tower over Hastings Fish Market.
Some of the oldest surviving houses in Hastings can be found in All Saints Street, dating from 1450. Much of the medieval Old Town would have looked like this, although the timber framing would have been lighter in colour.
At the top of All Saints Street is All Saints Church, but this photograph was taken looking the other way, down to the net lofts and the sea beyond.
